Choosing the right tonic is as vital as choosing your gin, as it is usually two thirds of the drink.

The palette of flavours contained in tonics continues to expand, with elderflower, camomile and rose being some of the latest additions. Therefore, first, identify the style of your own favourite gin, and the dominant flavours in it.

In the case of clear-cut classic gins, the juniper berry is very pronounced, and so it’s important to choose a classic tonic water that respects this character of the gin.

This type of gin doesn’t go very well with tonics that have a pronounced citrus or flowery taste. Gins with a more diverse palette of flavours, on the other hand, invite experimentation with more flowery tonics to accentuate the rich variety of flavourings.

You want to taste the gin! Lots of people don’t think they like gin - then they realise it’s tonic they don’t like. Tonics like@orncraftor@fentimansestoniaaren’t too overpowering- neither too much sugar nor too much quinine. You can always add more if it’s too strong. But you can’t take it out once you’ve drowned it.

Well, it has a lot to do with quinine, the ingredient that hails from the cinchona tree and also accounts for the bitter taste found in tonic water. Basically, that’s exactly what's wrong with nearly every other tonic on the market.

⚖️ Go ahead, spend tons of money on that bottle of artisanal gin. But remember - you’d be overlooking the secret to making the perfect gin and tonic.

Otherwise, your “premium super gin” will turn into a diluted sweetened shit and you won’t make any difference whether you’re drinking some packed wine or a very expensive drink.
