So, what exactly 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐆𝐢𝐧 is?
There’s no precise definition for it, nor any DOC laws or government regulations. For what it’s worth, you could start making Mediterranean Gin in Estonia if you feel the inclination.
𝐁𝐮𝐭! There’re two particular brands that started driving this conversation a long time ago: Gin Mare and Malfy Gin.

The first one is Spanish, with a distillery located just outside of Barcelona. The second is Italian, and distills straight outside of Turin.
And while Gin Mare labels itself a “Mediterranean Gin” straight on the bottle, Malfy is more elegantly leaning into its Italian heritage (the brand itself proudly contends that Italian monks were the first to distill gin along the Amalfi coast in 1050 A.D.).
What 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 is the use of exceptional 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬, which are felt on a tongue just as brightly in the flavor profile as the required juniper. In the case of Gin Mare, that’s Arbequina olives, while Malfy takes a careful mix of lemon peel both from Amalfi Coast Lemons and Sicilian lemons.
I must say that Malfy Gin is very lucky to include them in their botanical bill. These lemons are highly protected and there’s actually a lemon tourism industry around them. Limited in production to only 25 tons of lemons/hectare, they’re renowned for their potent aromatic quality, boasting more oil glands than other varieties.

𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐑𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐒:
⠀
𝘼𝘽𝙑: 41% (Base Spirit: Grain)
⠀
𝙊𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙞𝙣: Italy, Turin.
𝘽𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙙: @malfygin by Torino Distillati
𝙎𝙩𝙮𝙡𝙚: Contemporary
⠀
𝘼𝙍𝙊𝙈𝘼: nose is rich, with citrus oil notes: lots and lots of lemon, with some bitter orange rind notes underneath it. Deeper, you can feel a faint terpenic conifer note as well.
⠀
𝙏𝘼𝙎𝙏𝙀: tasted neat, the lemon is overwhelming and bordering on a sherberty limoncello.
𝙋𝘼𝙇𝙀𝙏𝙏𝙀: absolutely bursting with incredible lemon flavor. Whatever they’re doing with the lemon zest, it’s evident that they’ve preserved a great deal of the character.

The bottle itself is worthy of particular attention and definitely can be called 𝐌𝐚𝐥𝐟𝐲’𝐬 𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐝𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞. With uniquely custom designed cork and a bright label reminiscent of the Riviera - it will make your home bar much more vivid.
And while some dedicated fans of classic styles might find the focus too narrow or there to be not enough juniper for them, I think the attention to detail and elevating one fairly traditional gin botanical to these sort of heights definitely deserves some merit.
